Let's not talk about Dressen choosing to play two games in the Polo Grounds. Let's not talk about Dressen choosing to pitch Branca against Bobby Thomson, who ate Branca alive. Let's not talk about Hodges holding the runner on (even though that runner was meaningless) and giving the next hitter an easier shot to punch one into right field. Let's not talk about the sign-stealing Giants. Let's not talk about Erskine bouncing his first toss in the bullpen, a bounce that convinced Dressen that Branca was his guy. And let's not talk about the Russ Hodges call even though the one we heard on TV was Ernie Harwell's.

Instead let's talk about the poetry of Billy Collins, specifically his "Note to Prufrock," a poem that proves that the writer was as exasperated with T. S. Eliot as anyone should be. In fact, I would like to punch Eliot harder than I would like to belt Durocher. And the poetry of T. S. leaves a taste in my mouth more bitter than the shot heard round the world.

Now that we're not going to talk about it any more, what are your thoughts on "Note to Prufrock"?

Humankind cannot bear very much reality.
That being said, anyone (Collins) who imagines Shakespeare flying comfortably in first class and Keith Richards supporting the globe on his head, has my interest.
As for Eliot, he of dreadful anti-Semitism, I find both jejune and insipid.

Pete, you are incredible. And don't forget the infinite number of turtles Richards is balancing on.
