Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell, who was nearly traded to the Rangers a couple of weeks ago, underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair the torn radial collateral ligament in his right thumb.
The surgery, performed in Phoenix by Dr. Donald Sheridan, was said to be a success. According to a source, Lowell will go back to Phoenix to have the pin removed in roughly a month. A six-to-eight-week recovery period is expected, putting Lowell in position to be ready to resume full baseball activities early in Spring Training. It is expected that Lowell's thumb will be 100 percent healthy once his rehab is complete.

Mike Lowell could turn out to be the best deal the Bosox DIDN'T make.
You can wonder if LOWELL still wants to play for them after they wanted to get rid of him.
Lowell will be playing hard, because that is the type of player he is. But any player in that situation, wants to show that he can still play at a high level.

The Red Sox are on the verge of another significant upgrade to their defense, with a source confirming to MLB.com that the club is close to signing free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.

IMHO Beltre is a bit overrated. He had a great year in his final year with LA, but he never matched those numbers with Seattle.

It now looks like Casey Kotchman will be traded to the Seattle Mariners for cash a minor leaguer and a low level major leaguer. Now that Beltre has been signed to play third, Kevin Youkilis will remain on first and Kotchman became expendable. Seattle is putting together a nice looking team.

Ellsbury will have to move to leftfield, with Cameron in center. Defensively, that's the best team Francona can put out on the field. With Beltre at third, the Bosox should have a very good defensive club. Whoever thought that the Bostons would build a team around defense, speed, and pitching?
